The tight weave and material gives it the UPF 50+ sun protection, so it won't wash off like sunscreen does. Some of those nasty sunscreens have carcinogens and/or cause harm to our reefs, so it's best to use sunscreen ONLY where you cannot cover up with shirt or hat.
